How many of us downloaded at least one new app in the atypical year of 2020?

The arrival of the pandemic has brought with it new needs for governments, economic agents and families. In turn, the developers of applications were able to adapt, responding creatively, with solutions that have facilitated the new daily life (minimizing the impact of the restrictions we have been seeing).

Analyzing the double (and even triple) digit growths, there is no doubt that attitudes towards apps have changed.

In this article I have the pleasure of sharing some worldwide indicators related to the use of apps in the last year, the best apps of 2020 and some Portuguese apps that emerged post COVID-19. At the end, I will introduce you to the new app of the Alvalade Neighborhood – developed by Jelly.

Let’s have a look at a few numbers first:

  • In the first half of 2020, the number of app downloads grew 26.1% compared to the first half of 2019;
  • In the second quarter of 2020, the time spent using apps increased by 40% compared to the
    same period of the previous year;
  • At Google Play, “business”, “health and fitness”; and “education”, there were increases of 115%, 75% and 50%, respectively, when comparing the second quarter of 2020 with the same period in 2019;
  • In the Apple store, in the second quarter of 2020, the “business”; category experienced the most significant growth, led by video conferencing apps. Health and fitness, shopping and medicine apps have had a significant growth of 30%, 25% and 20%, respectively, compared to the same period of the previous year.

Analyzing the double (and even triple) digit growths, there is no doubt that attitudes towards apps have changed.

And which apps stood out in 2020?

Every year, Google and Apple reveal the best apps from their digital stores.

In the case of the PlayStore, Loóna was considered the best of the year and was designed to help people sleep better.

In Apple’s digital store, Wakeout! a kind of virtual personal trainer for people who want to become more active, won the title of best app of the year.

All this makes sense to me. In 2020, I had days when I had difficulty in falling asleep, especially in the first week of quarantine. I regret not having searched for Loóna in those moments. That was also the year when I discovered the power of gymnastics at home.

But we don’t have to go that far to find good initiatives.

What about Portugal? What has been done here?

From psychological support to shopping in the supermarket or pharmacy, “Quero Ajudar” is the Portuguese application that brings together a team of volunteers ready to provide services to those who are quarantined.

There is also an app that helps to see if there are too many people in the supermarket (“Can I Go?”), another to order medicines (“HomeMed”) and another to buy vouchers in the local trade (“Preserve.pt”). All this is national pride.

App Bairro de Alvalade

There are unquantifiable initiatives to be proud of and that I would like to highlight, but there is one more app that I cannot avoid sharing.

It is called Bairro de Alvalade, it was recently launched by the Board of the same Parish and was
developed by Jelly.

The app Bairro de Alvalade assumes itself as the great digital showcase of the neighborhood trade of the city of Lisbon.

The app currently streamlines 150 merchants and is available for Android and iOS. Users can check the exact location of the stores, schedules, payment methods, promotions, services available and also make a direct contact via a phone call or social networks.

The app also has articles of interest related to the Neighborhood and later this year new features will be made available.

I leave you in the company of Inês Lopes Gonçalves, television presenter and resident in the parish of Alvalade – the face of the promotional campaign to launch this app.
